Alexandru Popa's suggestion has been met with anger from the family of Constantin Micu, 40, and his wife Mihaela, 38, who died instantly in the crash
A boy racer who left two children orphaned when he crashed head-on into their parents' car has offered to adopt them.
BMW driver Alexandru Popa, 21, walked away from the 80mph smash without a scratch but Constantin Micu, 40, and his wife Mihaela, 38, were killed instantly and their bodies had to be cut from the wreckage.
The couple had been driving home to Mioveni, Romania with presents for their children, Alina, 13, and her 11-year-old brother Marian, when the crash happened last week.
The children are currently staying with their grandparents.
Madalina Sima, spokesperson of the County Police Inspectorate, said: "The 21-year -old man from the Colibasi area lost control on a curve on Logofat Stanciu Mihoveanu street driving from Mioveni.
"He had been travelling at excessive speed and crossed over to the other side where he was involved in a frontal collision with a Dacia. The male driver and a female passenger were killed."
The fatal collision was not the first time Popa has been involved in a major car accident.
In 2012, he was sued for allegedly being involved in an illegal car race in which one of the contenders died.
However it was decided it could not be proven that he had actually taken part in the race after all of the witnesses refused to testify.
In a separate incident in the same year he lost his licence for three months for speeding.
His family say that this time he has been shocked by the accident he was involved in.
Cousin Ramona Popa told local media: "Alexandru is shocked, all he can think about is those children.
"He knows the two parents died and he feels very sorry. The only thing he has in his mind now is how he can help the children.
"He has discussed it with us, his family, and we have decided we’d like to adopt them."
The offer was greeted with fury by the family of the dead couple.
Mihaela Micu's mother, Gherghina Chirita, 62, said: "He killed my daughter – how can I give him my grandchildren?
"This is just an attempt to make people feel sorry for him and to get him off the hook. I want justice! This criminal shouldn’t have been on the streets after he had his license suspended."
She said the two children would probably be adopted by their aunt.
Local priest Mircea Pana, a close friend of the victims, said: "The children were everything to this couple and with good reason.
"They are both wonderful children. Alina has been studying hard at school and Marian is a child that loves nature. It really is a tragedy."
